Programmable driver with over-boost and PLC functions

The NEPTUNE-PLUS driver has been designed to solve numerous problems related to the intervention speed of electromechanical or electropneumatic actuators powered at 24Vdc (electrovalves, electric brakes, solenoids, etc.).

It is possible to significantly reduce the response time (activation) of the actuators connected to it, allowing an increase in the working speed. The reduction of the activation time is obtained by sending an instantaneous overvoltage, which allows the actuator to be magnetised in a shorter time than that obtainable at a nominal voltage of 24Vdc. The use of an instantaneous overvoltage allows the actuator’s performance to be increased without causing it to overheat or become damaged.

The NEPTUNE-PLUS has a new programmable logic system that allows the implementation of some typical PLC functions.

The NEPTUNE-PLUS driver is equipped with 9 inputs:

  • inputs I1-I6 can be combined with 2 outputs with user programmable functions
  • Inputs I7-I9 can be used to manage special functions (enabling, disabling, encoder connection).

The NeptunePlus can be programmed in various ways, using the RS485 serial port with ModBus™ RTU protocol with which it is equipped:

  • Via PC equipped with NeptunePlus-COM software
  • Via the WB485 programming interface and the NeptuneApp for Android™.
  • Using any programming terminal (industrial PC, touch screen, etc.) equipped with a standard ModBus™ RTU serial port.

The programmable parameters are various:

  • Status of inputs causing outputs to be activated
  • Output activation times, enabling and duration of the pause function, activation and deactivation delays
  • Enabling of the precision timer function
  • Enabling/disabling of the memory function (start/stop), to be used, for example, for controlling brake-clutch units
  • Enabling of signal synchronisation encoder management

With NEPTUNE-PLUS, it is therefore possible to perform numerous functions that would normally require an increase in the complexity of the control panel, such as:

  • Significant reduction in the time required for the actuator to switch from rest to operation (in the case of solenoid valves, the time is reduced by 30-50%).
  • Activation functions of an actuator with the simultaneous presence of several control signals
  • Control of an actuator with very precise and strictly constant timing, even with command signals of irregular duration
  • Possibility of controlling the actuator not continuously, but in a fragmented manner (with working and pause times programmable by the user), for the duration of the command signal. This function, in the field of adhesive dispensing, allows considerable savings to be made on the quantity of adhesive deposited, with great advantages in both economic and environmental terms.
  • Control of brake/clutch units with reduced switching time between braking and clutch engagement.
  • Possibility of managing variable speed lines thanks to the encoder input.

The NEPTUNE-PLUS is equipped with self-diagnostic functions that reveal any anomalies on the load (overload), which increases its reliability and helps identify altered working conditions.

Compared to other systems, the NEPTUNE-PLUS driver offers many advantages:

Easy installation in new and existing plants:

  • The NEPTUNE-PLUS card is inserted along the cables connecting the actuator to the control system (PLC, cam-controller, etc.) without requiring any special precautions.
  • For its operation it needs only 24Vdc power supply, thanks to the internal converter that generates the excitation overvoltage.

Protection of the actuators: the overvoltage pulse lasts only few msecs, thus avoiding overheating of the controlled coils, with the possibility of damage, typical of systems in which the actuators are supplied at voltages higher than the nominal one.

Programmable over-boost duration, output activation time and related functions (input combination, storage functions, etc.).
